On September 15, 2021, the Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affair Plumbing Board adopted a new Michigan Plumbing Code. With this adoption also came a new code update continuing education (CE) course requirement for all currently licensed Journeyman and Master plumbers in Michigan.
Before we continue, it’s important to note that this code update CE requirement is not related to the April 30 license renewal deadline. It’s a standalone requirement that comes along every time there’s a code update.
With that in mind, let’s discuss the code update, how updates are approved, and our new online course package!
Michigan plumbers have until March 31, 2023 to complete a state-required code update course based on the 2018 International Plumbing Code (IPC).
Every three years or so, the International Code Council (ICC) recommends code changes based on new developments that safeguard the health and safety of plumbers and the public.
These suggested changes are then published for feedback from the public and organizations such as the American Society of Plumbing Engineers.
Once the ICC approves the code changes and publishes an updated International Plumbing Code book, Michigan reviews the updated code book and amends it to apply to Michigan plumbers specifically. This new Michigan Plumbing Code is what all licensed plumbers must use.
The Michigan Plumbing Code amendments focus on Part 7 of the 2018 IPC. Specific changes include:
These Michigan amendments are why all licensed plumbers in Michigan must take a state-approved code update course before March 31, 2023.
Luckily, you can complete this required course from home!
Our state-approved code update course covers everything you need to know to renew your license, including:
